◆An antique plate by Faience Fine, dating to the very early period of Montreuil Octogonal in the early 19th century.
A simple yet striking piece with a beautiful octagonal form, its rim encircled by small pearl decorations.
The slightly warm white glaze, rather than a stark white, is also characteristic of early Faience Fine.
Because it is plain white without any painted decoration, you can enjoy the form of the vessel itself, created over 200 years ago.
The reverse bears a mark found on the earliest Montreuil Octogonal pieces.
(The M and N of MAU No. 13 can be identified.)
Researcher Patrice Valfre associates this mark with the early Montreuil Potter period*,
making this a rare piece that evokes the era in which French Faience Fine flourished.
*The period when British industrialist Christopher Potter managed the pottery business in Montreuil
There are some slight cutlery marks and stains, but overall there is very little sign of use, and it is in very beautiful condition.
There are kiln marks on the rim, likely from production. (Photo 12)
There are minor manufacturing irregularities typical of antique ceramics. (Please see the enlarged photos.)
No chips or cracks were found.
●Size: 20.5 cm in diameter (side to side)
●Period: Early 19th century, circa 1808
●Crazing: Approximately 10% of the surface
(→Crazing refers to the condition of the surface glaze caused during production or over time, and is not damage (cracks).)
*Antique tableware may show kiln marks, uneven paint, and wobbling from the manufacturing process, as well as
small chips, crazing, and scratches.
We strive to describe the condition of our items as thoroughly as possible through photos and descriptions,
